About bolarti

An Italian combination of BOLSA (woman’s handbag) and ARTE (art), bolarti is a hand-painted bespoke handbag atelier with exclusive designs constructed from superior acrylic paints and genuine linen canvases. bolarti is the result of Wendi McGowan's desire to create useful, beautiful things with individualistic flair.

Making arms artistic, bolarti produces dramatic one-of-a-kind pieces that are striking, creative and beautiful in design. The clientele are fashion-conscious women who desire handbags which are the ultimate exceptional accessory.

bolarti focuses on creating hand-painted bespoke bags that are inspired by art, interior design, architecture and most importantly, fashion, all elements that have been the driving muses of modern accessories design. An interesting benefit of the bags is their “hand.” Most people have an intrinsic reaction to want to touch the paintings in a museum. By owning a bolarti bag, art is literally in your hand, and this is the fundamental philosophy and creative driving force behind the bolarti label.

For bolarti, the experience of carrying art as a fashion accessory also comes with social responsibility, and so, 10% of all company proceeds to go the Booker T. Washington School for Visual and Performing Arts in Dallas, Texas. Booker T. Washington’s mission is to provide intensive training in the Arts and Academics for career and college readiness. In addition to academic departments, the school has four arts clusters – music, theater, dance and visual arts – each requiring specific performance or studio space.

The mission of bolarti is to create hand-crafted one-of-a-kind bags transmitting quality materials and excellent service through innovation and craftsmanship in every collection. Knowing that handmade pieces are really of a different quality, bolarti portrays an irregularity in its designs that gives the line more soul. With bags that are both striking and timeless, yet also have a touch of mystery, bolarti offers a ready-to-wear collection as well as a Custom Creation line which serves exclusive custom-made and limited edition designs.

About Wendi

A lifetime of appreciating art, the finer things in life, and a desire to create her own sense of aesthetic drove Wendi McGowan to create the bolarti brand. Launching the handbag collection in 2010 was the culmination of her love affair with art, fashion and all things unique. She determined that the independent and creative spirit that imbues the Dallas landscape of the region also reflect the spirit of bolarti. Reinterpreting the concept of artistic accents, the expressive design, innovation, materials, and creativity that comprise a bolarti bag creates an accessory instantly recognizable for its indistinguishable design.

A fashion fanatic was born when Wendi began hand-selecting her own Garanimals™ at age 3 in the 1970's. "By the time I was a teenage cheerleader, all I knew for sure about a career path was that I wanted to work with people and that I couldn't live without glamour," she says. "I fondly remember that my grandmother wouldn't leave the house without her gloves, hat, red lipstick, and of course, a fabulous handbag. Mama Ruth's penchant for style and grace is alive in me with an artistic twist."

Wendi completed her education at the University of Texas at Austin where she received a degree in Economics. Starting her first company before graduating, her goal was to create a successful business by the age of 40. Over the past ten years, Wendi has built a consulting practice as an interactive marketing and branding expert.

However, in 2009, before her 40th birthday, Wendi first picked up a palette knife and the feeling of the paint on the canvas was a freedom of expression that her Type A personality had never experienced before. Painting was an escape from corporate board rooms and executive meetings. And so, with the creation of “Peacock Fields,” her first painting inspired the idea of marrying fashion and art… bolarti was born.

Today, Wendi designs with the uncommon extraordinary woman in mind. She recognizes and delivers one-of-a-kind bags to the customer who has a desire to be upscale, stylish and sexy without concern for labels. Her muse is confident, chic, sophisticated and enjoys the notion of being an urban dweller with all the cosmopolitan aspects. Most importantly, the bolarti customer is terminally unique and completely self-expressed.
